Keep your SmartStrand carpet looking like new by learning how to remove stains like a pro!
Whether you’ve recently installed SmartStrand carpet in your home or you’re preparing to, you want to make sure your investment lasts! Carpet is a truly wonderful thing, as it comes in many styles and colors, and it will make your home feel warm and cozy. Unfortunately, just one stain is all it takes to ruin your once-beautiful carpet, but when you arm yourself with a little know-how, you’ll be ready to take on even the worst stains. Here are a few tips from our expert carpet installers in Fairfield to help you remove stains from your SmartStrand carpet:
#1. Coffee, tea, beer or wine
Blot the stain first to remove any excess moisture. Then, use a solution of white vinegar and water to neutralize the stain. Mix a small amount of detergent with warm water (about 1/4 teaspoon of detergent to one quart of water). Apply the detergent solution to the stain, and use a clean cloth to blot it up. Once the stain disappears, rinse the spot with clean water and blot again to soak up the moisture. If the stain is on the tougher side, weigh down a stack of paper towels on the spot overnight.
#2. Blood, cheese, ketchup, soda, chocolate, soy sauce, etc.
If you are removing blood, keep in mind that any solution you use will need to be cool, so always mix with cold water. First, remove any solid pieces and get as much of the material out of the carpet as possible using the edge of a dull knife. Use a solution of ammonia and water to neutralize the spot, then use a mix of detergent and water (the same as in #1) to saturate the spot. Then, use a clean cloth to blot the spot. Continue saturating and blotting the spot until the stain disappears, and if it’s a tougher stain, use the same paper towel trick that we touched on in our last point. Once the stain is gone, rinse the spot with water and blot with a clean towel.
#3. Mud and dirt
If you have mud on your carpet, allow it to completely dry before you do anything else. Remove the dried pieces of dirt or mud with the handle of a dull knife, then use a vacuum to pick up any remaining pieces. For the remaining stain, apply a detergent solution to the area and blot it up with a clean, dry towel. Once the stain has lifted, rinse with water and blot with another towel.
#4. Stubborn stains
Some stains require a little more than the above solutions, and if the stain is still stubbornly there after you’ve taken the appropriate steps, apply three percent hydrogen peroxide to it. Then, put a stack of paper towel on the stain, weighing it down with something heavy, like a book, and allow it to dry.
#5. Stains that alter your carpet.
While, luckily, you can get the majority of stains out on your own, some stains can actually alter the color of your carpet. These include stains from acidic toilet bowl cleaners, alkaline drain cleaners, acne medications, hair dye, bleach, insecticides, iodine, plant fertilizers and mustards. You should NEVER attempt to remove stains like these on your own, as you can void your warranty by doing so. Instead, protect your warranty by calling a professional.
Immediate action is key to tackling even the toughest stains.
When you spill something on your carpet, don’t wait to start treating the stain, because the longer you put it off, the worse the stain will get and the harder it will be to get out of your carpet.
